The Modern Hair Transplant: FUE (Follicular unit extraction)

What is a FUE hair transplant?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplants are done by taking individual hair follicles from your skin and implanting them elsewhere in your body. This will make the hair in the new area look thicker.

FUE was intended to replace the “classic” follicular unit transplantation (FUT) technology. This procedure was performed by taking a whole piece of skin or scalp along with the follicles and transplanting the skin onto the target area.

FUE has become more popular then FUT as it is less likely to lead to a 'hair plug' look, where areas of skin or hair do not match the surrounding areas. It also doesn't leave a big scar like FUT that does.

The best candidate for a FUE hair transplant is someone with thinning hair or baldness who still has enough hair around to use for a transplant.

You may not be a candidate for a FUE hair transplant if you do not have enough healthy or thick hair to transplant to the thinning or balding area.

A FUE Hair Transplant

How much does a FUE hair transplant cost?

The final costs of a FUE hair transplant depend on:

  • How much hair is extracted and transplanted
  • How many surgeons are available in your area to perform this procedure
  • How often your surgeon can perform FUE hair transplants
  • How experienced or in demand your surgeon is
  • You will likely have to pay out of pocket for a FUE
  • hair transplant, because most health insurance policies do not cover cosmetic procedures such as these.

You will also need to cover prescription medications for pain or other possible side effects that may result from the procedure.

When considering costs, you should factor in time off work for recovery. This could be at home for 3 to 4 days.

Most companies do not cover hair transplants under medical leave policies.

How does a FUE hair transplant work?

As you age, the three-phase cycle of hair growth and regrowth shortens until the follicles no longer regrow hair.

This process is different for everyone. Some people start going bald in their twenties, while others go bald much later in life.

FUE hair transplants restore hair by replacing these old follicles with new follicles that can still grow hair.

After the transplant, the follicles are nourished by blood vessels and begin to grow hair in the area that previously had thin hair or balding hair.

Through our expertise and experience, we know that many factors must be taken into account, including gender, origin, hair color, hair thickness and the direction of your hair growth.

You will always receive a tailor-made treatment that suits your personal preferences and wishes.

Preparing for a FUE hair transplant

Here are some things you may need to do before getting a FUE hair transplant:

  • Do not smoke for at least a day before your surgery.
  • Do not drink alcohol for at least 3 days before your surgery.
  • Do not take aspirin or blood thinners for about 2 weeks before your surgery.
  • Do not take vitamins or nutritional supplements for 2 weeks before your surgery.
  • Try to avoid taking antidepressants for about 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Do not have your hair cut before the operation.
  • Do a 10- to 30-minute scalp massage every day for a few weeks to improve blood flow to your scalp.
  • Take any medications, such as minoxidil (Rogaine), that your surgeon asks you to take.

Advantages of the FUE method

The recovery time with the micro FUE hair transplant is much faster

There is no large long scar visible, so you can wear your hair shorter in the future if you wish.

We only select the highest quality grafts, with the most hairs, so that you get the best density in the recipient area.

Since there are no cuts or stitches and because we work with the most excellent team of doctors with years of experience, the chance of infections and other complications is nil.

FueGenix Hair Clinic is the only clinic in the Netherlands where the complete treatment is carried out by an ISHRS and BIG registered doctor. In addition, the first contact with our clinic is directly with the doctor himself. This way you are assured of superior quality and excellent expertise.

Comparison between FUT and FUE

  • In the case of FUE, there is no linear scar in the donor area, while in FUT the linear scar remains visible, especially in the case of people who wear very short hair.
  • People who undergo FUE recover much faster than those who do FUT have undergone.
  • The small holes created in FUE heal in a much shorter time than the linear FUT strip scar.
  • Small holes made in FUE do not get bigger with strenuous exercise, while with FUT strip scars, strenuous exercise can lead to widening of the scar.
  • There is less postoperative discomfort after FUE in the donor area compared to FUT.
