Shave bald? Can't a hair transplant be done without it?

A Hair Transplant Without Shaving Your Head

An important part of a hair transplant is shaving your scalp.

However, this part is not always necessary.

We understand very well that the decision to shave or not is usually one of the toughest choices you make in preparation for a FUE procedure

Shaving the hair on the head completely short can be a problem, especially for women and men with longer hair.

That is why at FueGenix Hair Clinic we also offer hair-sparing hair transplants where treatment is performed without shaving.

You may have heard of unshaved hair transplantation, but there is still a lot of confusion about what it actually means.

At some clinics this means that the donor area is completely shaved, but the recipient area is not.

In other cases, it suggests that the areas of the donor scalp that are harvested are shaved and then covered with the surrounding long hair.

It can also mean that neither the donor nor recipient parts of the scalp are shaved.

Although it is technically possible to perform a hair transplant without shaving the patient's head, this method is not suitable for everyone.

No-shave FUE is a more complicated and time-consuming procedure, so it is normally only performed in cases where a small area of hair loss is being treated.

Even then, it is usually preferable to shave both the recipient and donor areas if possible.

time consuming

At FueGenix Hair Clinic we perform FUE in certain cases with an unshaved donor and/or unshaved recipient area.

However, we usually limit the use of the technique to smaller cases due to the greater technical challenges associated with the procedure.

With a partially unshaved treatment, small strips of hair are shaved from the donor area.

The hair above and below this strip remains unshaved.

The unshaved hair therefore falls over the shaved strip, camouflaging the donor area.

Grafts are then harvested from the strip that is shaved and used for the hair transplant.

Who is a suitable candidate?

Women almost always opt for a hair-sparing hair transplant because they prefer not to walk around with short hair for a long time.

But men with long hair also sometimes choose to be treated unshaven.

A major advantage of a hair-saving transplant is that the shaved strips can be easily hidden by existing hair.

A condition for this is that the hair that falls over the shaved part should be long enough.

What are the limitations?

However, this form of hair transplant is more labor-intensive than a completely shaved treatment.

The kost more time and effort to replace the transplanted hair between existing hair.

For this reason, a hair-sparing treatment is often something more expensive then a full shave treatment. We can also transplant fewer hairs in one session.

The donor area is also limited, because only a small strip is shaved. The maximum amount of hair that can be transplanted is also personal.

What are the benefits of shaving?

Although it is possible to have a FUE hair transplant without shaving your head, there are some benefits to shaving the donor and recipient areas:

  • Improved visibility: by shaving the patient's head, the surgical team has a much clearer view of the donor and recipient area.
  • Easier and faster: with an unobstructed view it becomes ahead the surgeon easier, simpler and faster to extract and implant the grafts, resulting in less operating time.
  • No risk of grafts becoming entangled and over-handled: shaving the donor and/or recipient areas prevents the grafts from being over-handled by becoming tangled in the existing hair.
  • Easier to clean: a shaved head is easier to keep clean once the surgery is over and during the recovery period.
  • Easier to apply aftercare spray: a shaved head makes it easier to... aftercare spray during the first few days of recovery.
  • Less risk of a graft becoming loose: without the risk of long surrounding hairs lying over the grafts and sticking to the grafts, the risk of graft dislodgement in the early postoperative period is reduced.

There are clear benefits to shaving your head before undergoing a hair transplant and many surgeons prefer to work this way.

If you FUE hair transplant undergo surgery at FueGenix, you will normally be advised to keep your hair at its usual length for the day of surgery.

This helps the treating doctor to properly assess your scalp and plan your hair recovery.

If necessary, he will shave your head during your preoperative procedure consult on the afternoon before or morning of your procedure.

Won't everyone notice my shaved head?

It's understandable that you might be nervous about shaving your head when you have a hair transplant especially if you normally want to keep your hair long.

If this is the case, you may want to gradually transition to a shorter hairstyle in the months leading up to your surgery.

This gives you and your family and friends time to get used to a shorter cut, making your shaved head less of a focal point after your hair transplant.
